What a stupid day.
So last night I felt sick. REALLY sick. I was positive I was going to throw up, plus I had a sore throat and diarrhea (did you really need to know that?). So this morning I emailed my work to tell them I needed to take a sick day, I took some NyQuil (actually a store-brand copy of NyQuil if you care...) and fell back asleep.
I woke up at 3:45 this afternoon, and Laura and the kids had driven across town to hang out with her parents. My phone had a text message from Laura that said "It's snowing like crazy over here!" so I looked outside and sure enough - tons of snow on the ground.
It doesn't snow too often in the Portland area. We get snow usually about once a year, and it's not usually very bad. But there's one thing you can bet the bank on - even if there isn't much snow, Portland drivers still know how to get into snow-related car accidents. Idiots.
With that in mind, I spent the afternoon hanging out, trying to avoid looking at the huge mess in our living room (thanks, kids!) and trying not to feel sick. By 7:00, I felt pretty crappy again, so I took some more NyQuil (derivative), took a bath, and got into bed.
Can anyone guess what happened?
If your guess is "You woke up in the future to find yourself the only living human left..." you're not too far off.
I woke up at 10:00 p.m. and Laura and the kids still weren't home! We usually get the kids in bed by 8 or 9, so that was highly unusual. I hurried downstairs to where I had left my cell phone charging and called Laura.
It turns out that she had been stuck in snow-related traffic for almost three hours and couldn't get past downtown Portland. When I called, she was in the process of turning around to head back to her parents' house. I looked at live traffic cameras online and - sure enough - idiot drivers were blocking all traffic headed west.
So Laura and the kids are now at my in-laws' place for the night. They're on an impromptu camping trip, I guess. And me? I'm left alone in the house, wide awake from sleeping today, and with nothing to do (except clean up this mess, which isn't going to happen...).
What a stupid day.
